"Hill Country Roadrunner at Sunset" 14" x 24" Framed Wool Rug by Taryn Kail
This is a framed rug designed and crafted by Taryn Kail, a fiber artist based in Helotes, Texas. It is called Hill Country Roadrunner.
Frame size (outer) is 20.5" x 30.5" (fitting a 20 x 30 canvas).
The art piece is 14" x 24" 100% wool yarn on 100% Cotton monk's cloth.
The yarn is placed loop-by-loop and does not use glue - the packing tension of the yarn holds everything in place very well and this piece can be walked on / used as a rug for many decades without crushing. It is not, however, puppy proof and if you pull a loop hard enough it will unravel.
This rug / wall hanging was punched on monk’s cloth with a #10 Oxford Punch Needle. The piece also has a two-row border punched with #14 Oxford Punch Needle. I finished with mitered corners that are left open for a hanging dowel.
The rug / wall hanging is attached non-permanently to a cloth-covered painter's canvas with a basting stitch (see below for definition) and "signed" with a vegan-leather signature tag allowing you to use this piece as an actual rug or re-frame to your own tastes. The canvas is held into the frame with velcro - which may come loose over time and can be replaced with basic craft velcro. All framing is made to be non-permanent for your convenience.
Taryn Kail is an Oxford Certified Punch Needle Rug Hooking Instructor who trained under Amy Oxford, the world leader in the craft.
The wool is sourced from Briggs & Little, a trusted Canadian brand who utilize York Mills, New Brunswick, Canada - a 150 year old family-run business that works with local wool and fiber. The yarn is hand-dyed in the US. by Rebecca Martin of Storyteller Wool in Colorado in small batches.
Basting Stitch - a non-temporary method for attaching fabrics in a non-permanent way to a backing with long irregular stitches that can be removed without harming the original fabric.
Oxford Punch Needle designed by punch needle expert Amy Oxford, is a highly regarded, ergonomic tool for creating looped textile art like rugs and wall hangings.
Cleaning: Spot clean as needed with wool-friendly cleaner. Always test a patch before using a substance on the whole piece - wool tends to be very stain resistant and naturally water proof. This piece is scrub-able but since it is wool please avoid agitating the surface too much or the wool will become felt. Do not machine wash or put this into a dryer.
